Phase 01: Understand
1.0 Overview
The Understand phase establishes the foundation for your exercise by gathering essential information. The purpose is to reduce the risk of creating something that won't work. We'll guide you through the minimum necessary details and show you methods to discover more. This phase ensures you're know enough before investing resources in next phases.
Quick navigation
What happens in this phase:
- Grasp exercise fundamentals – Learn exercises basics within the INJECT Exercise Platform.
- Understand the types of exercises – Consider format, instructors involvement and presentation method.
- Find out the needs – Discover why the exercise matters and define what participants should take away.
- Understand trainees – Go deeper into who your participants are, what they know, why they're attending, and what concerns they have.
- Understand constraints and conditions – Clarify stakeholder expectations, gather contextual details for realistic scenarios, and identify delivery conditions and constraints that will shape your design.

Can we skip this phase?
That's up to you - you know your situation best. Just remember: creating an exercise without adequately identifying the necessary information can result in building something that simply won't function as intended. A few hours spent understanding now can save days of rework later. Also, if this is your first experience with INJECT, the sections "1. Exercises and INJECT" and "2. Exercise Types" are essential reading.

Our recommendation here is not to go step by step, but to first go through the sections and make a plan. The sections in the documentation are thematically divided, but in their realization you can connect several tasks into the same interviews or workshops.
Glossary
We use several terms in the INJECT process that may be unfamiliar, but you can always find their definitions in our glossary.
